About Our Class
First Grade has an exciting year ahead of us!
Here's a look ahead at some of the main MATH concepts we'll learn this year:
*Numbers to 120 (compare & order, count by 1's, 5's and 10's; read & write numbers; use place value, tell 1 more/less than a number & 10 more/less than a number.)
*Compose & decompose all sums to 10,
(ex: 4+2=6, 2+4=6)
*Addition and Subtraction (story problems, doubles, using pictures/objects to solve, number sentences.)
* Coin names, values, and conversions, counting multiples of coins (pennies by 2's, nickels by 5's and dimes by 10's to 120.)
*2D and 3D Geometrical Shapes (names, counting faces, edges and vertices
*Length (standard and non-standard measurement, compare & estimate.)
*Time (to the hour & half-hour) *Graphs (create, read, and interpret data)
In READING we'll learn about:
* Beginning, middle and end sounds in words
* 105 High Frequency Words * Make inferences
* Decoding unknown words
(using letter sounds, spelling patterns, & syllables)
* Self-correcting * Predicting
* Reading Independently * Reading grade level text
* Make connections * Main idea & details
* Describe characters' actions and feelings
* Comprehension * Text features
In WRITING we will learn about:
* Spelling strategies * Spelling high frequency words
* Capitalization & punctuation * Writing process
(plan, draft, edit, publish)
* Writing genres
(stories, personal narratives, poems, letters, nonfiction, etc.)
In SCIENCE we will learn about:
* Classifying matter (solid, liquid & gas) * Plant parts
* Recording the weather * Objects in the sky
* Day/night & seasons * Force, motion, & energy
(magnets, pushes, pulls, light, heat & sound energy)
* Animals
(habitats, diet, movement,
offsspring, life cycles,
& interdependence)
In SOCIAL STUDIES we will learn about:
* Government * Geography
(authority figures, rules & laws) (cardinal directions & maps)
* History * Culture
(past/present/future, timelines, (customs & traditions)
calendars, Texas, US)
* Economics
(goods/services & markets)
